The Young Queen Experience

#YKQ

My name is Vaelyn Miltier-Ferguson. I am actually a junior at Wharton Highschool. I graduate in the class of 2022. I want to go to Clark Atlanta University with a Major in Psychology and with a minor in criminal law. I am involved in a school program called NJROTC that teaches and guides me to be more assertive and a leader to my peers . NJROTC has helped me gain structure, discipline and morals to help me stand by and journey into adulthood and become an independent person. I have learned through experience that if you work hard now and stay on track you get to relax when that time comes.

My favorite quote I like to draw motivation from when I need it is by Jimmy Iovine, “Fear ‘s a powerful thing. I mean it’s got a lot of fire power. If you can figure out a way to wrestle that fear to push you from behind rather than stand in front of you that’s very powerful”.

Basically you take that fear that stops you from being your best version of yourself and have that somehow motivate you to achieve more than you ever dream of. That takes discipline, hardwork and determination to want to do for yourself so I apply this quote to my daily life and challenges that get thrown my way.

One of my top goals is to be a lawyer. This is hard work and I am looking forward to the challenge. Once I have achieved my career goals and retirement is in sight I want to be a part of the innocence program to help people who have been wrongfully convicted of a crime. This can help to send a message to those sitting in prison who’ve done nothing wrong and let them know that someone believes their story and is willing to help, and I know that I can’t give them the time they’ve lost but this should at least give them a sense of hope to know someone is in there corner fighting for them. This is something that I gained from my time in the Young King/Queen organization and is my way of giving back to society by helping those who are in need. That is a key principle of being a Young Queen, giving back and being a beacon of light for someone else.
